You’ve likely heard much ado about pheromones in the media today, and perhaps you’ve seen Infomercials about them. But what are they exactly? Pheromones are odorless, airborne chemicals that are given off by fertile members of a sex-reproducing species in order to send various signals to opposite-gendered members of that same species. As of 2005 scientists have found four classes of pheromones:

Mother-infant recognition: these tell babies which mother is theirs to suckle from, and they tell mothers which infants should be allowed to “remain”

Menstrual synchrony: given off by females, these pheromones cause women who are consistently near each other to begin menstruating at the same time each month. This is why mothers and their teenage daughters so often develop menstrual synchronization, much to the dismay of the men in the household (although some men may be relieved that all of that PMS “gets out of the way” all at once).

Territorial marking: found in males, these give off the signal “stay away from my women”.

Human sexual attraction: these are the ones that you’re concerned with. Given off by both males and females, these send the signal “I’m very sexy/very fertile”.

Perfumes and colognes have for ages been designed to attract members of the opposite sex through the power of scent. Pheromones, for a long time, were thought not to exist in human beings, because they are odorless. However, it turns out that while they are odorless they act like perfume and cologne in every other way: they are airborne, they are invisible, they “waft” from the person, and the primitive part of our brain that responds to scent responds to pheromones. Although odorless to our human cognition, pheromones are received and perceived through the olfactory nerves.

Dr. Winnifred Cutler of the Athena Institute explains “[M]y colleagues and I succeeded in peer-reviewed acceptance for publication in scientific journals in 1986. We provided the proof that women and men emitted pheromones into the atmosphere and we showed that extracted pheromones could be collected, frozen for over a year, thawed, and then applied topically above the upper lip of recipients to mimic some of the pheromonal effects found in nature.”

So, from this research, we can see why so many pheromone and pheromone-containing products (including, yes, many perfumes and colognes) have been developed and put on the market. Men and women with the stronger or “better” pheromones, well, get more sex, or they have an easier time convincing members of the opposite sex to take a chance on them. Pheromones worn on the body may also help to rev up a dwindling romantic life between lovers or husband and wife.
